Example 9: Beethoven String Quartet Op. 18 No. 4, first movement In this example from Bartok, the violins are asked NOT to spread the chords but strike the notes together, which can only be done very loudly. The cello, on the other hand, is asked to start the chords at the top and arpeggiated downwards.

Jan 19,  · Bartok: String Quartets is a EMI Records Ltd. recording starring the Belcea Quartet. Having listened to Emerson String Quartets recording prior to this one, I must say that the former is better. The playing is good but the passion is lacking. The playing style is a bit lackadascial and could use some more passion for the music/5(7).

The quartet's first four notes -- two descending minor sixths played imitatively by the first and second violins -- are nearly identical to the opening motif of the second, giocoso, movement of the Violin Concerto No. 1 (), Bartók's musical portrait of Geyer, with whom he was unrequitedly in love.

Bartók's String Quartet No. 4 was written in the summer of and premiered that fall by the Kolisch Quartet, led by Arnold Schoenberg's brother-in-law, Rudolf Kolisch. The work represents both an intensification and relaxation of elements present in Bartók's previous quartet.
